Arab World: Federation to set up board to protect Arab journalists

Khaleej Times Online 24 April 2011

DUBAI - The regional meeting of the Federation of Arab Journalists (FAJ) recently approved a draft to set up a defence board to shield journalists in the region as proposed by the UAE Journalists Association, according to Mohammed Yousof, chairman of the board of directors of the association.
A general assembly meeting of the UAE Journalists Association held at Shangri-La Hotel in Dubai on Thursday evening reviewed the decisions taken at the IFJ regional meeting held in Morocco last week.
The defense board will be headquartered in the UAE, Yousof said.
The board shall protect Arab journalists wherever they are in cases relevant to their career and will sue whoever who affronts, obstructs or attacks any Arab journalist. A voluntary team of journalists and lawyers from the board will take legal action and work on protecting their rights in such cases, Yousof noted.
A sub-defence board will be formed in every Arab country.
“Work is underway to host a meeting of the Arab Group of Journalists with the Federations of Journalists in Latin America and Africa. As many as 140 heads of journalists’ organisations and federations in these countries will attend the meeting to be held under the supervision of the FAJ and IFJ.”
The UAE Journalists Association meeting also discussed its past activities and future programmes.
